Chapter 25

IT’S ALREADY LIGHT when I wake. I stay perfectly still at first, lying with my eyes shut, listening to the sound of Ethan’s steady breathing. His arms are wrapped around me, blanketing me in the warmth of his body as much as the sleeping bag that covers us.

I pull the bag up under my chin and smile remembering the night before. We’d spent hours kissing and getting to know each other, finally falling asleep in each other’s arms. Ethan had been true to his word and we hadn’t had sex. I think he quite enjoyed denying me as my inhibitions disappeared, but he’d said teasingly, “I have many flaws, but if nothing else, I’m a man of my word. I always keep my promises.”

I couldn’t think of any flaws.

Although it’s light, the sun hasn’t reached this part of the valley yet and it’s cold outside the sleeping bag. I scan the tent, looking for my clothes, and see my top at the end of the tent. I carefully lift Ethan’s arm off me and start to lean out of the bag, trying not to pull the cover off him. I’ve just managed to reach the top with my fingertips when Ethan grabs me from behind and pulls me back into his arms.

“Where do you think you’re going?” He nuzzles into my neck.

“Nowhere, I was just looking for my clothes,” I say, enjoying that he doesn’t want me to go.

“And why on Earth would you need clothes?” He chuckles quietly and then begins to kiss down my neck to my shoulder, turning me to face him.

“No idea. Absolutely no idea at all.” I smile at him.

“So, do you still think this was a wasted trip?”

I laugh, not bothering to answer, knowing he isn’t expecting one.

“I’m not sure I want to go back.” Ethan sighs as he stretches his arms above his head. “How about we just forget about the others, forget about going back? We could build a little cabin and live out the apocalypse here, just the two of us. What do you reckon?” He wraps his arms around me again. “Or ... maybe we could just stay up here for one more night? I don’t think I’m ready to give you up just yet.”

“Don’t give me up then.” I kiss him, wanting to make the idea too difficult to contemplate.

“I’m not planning on it.” He lifts me so I’m lying on top of him. “I just don’t think there’ll be much opportunity for this when we go back.”

I look down at him, my hair falling around his face. “Oh, really? You don’t think this would be acceptable bunk-rooming behaviour?”

“We might need to get creative, otherwise things could get a bit awkward.”

“Why would it be awkward?”

“It just might be a bit uncomfortable with the others if we’re suddenly behaving like a couple or something,” he explains. “Especially around Skye at the moment, you know, because of Emily. I think it would be hard for her to see us together
